Tahrir Monument: Symbol of Iraqi Resilience

The Tahrir Monument (also known as the Freedom Monument or Nasb al-Hurriyah) is an iconic landmark in the heart of Baghdad, situated in the bustling Tahrir Square (Liberation Square). This monument commemorates Iraq's declaration of independence and stands as a powerful symbol of the nation's journey towards freedom and stability. Commissioned in 1959 and opened in 1961, the monument was designed by the celebrated Iraqi sculptor Jawad Saleem, along with architect Rifat Chadirji. Following Saleem's death in January 1961, his wife, Lorna Saleem, and colleague Mohammed Ghani Hikmat finalized the project. The monument consists of 14 bronze castings representing 25 figures on a travertine slab, raised six meters off the ground. The bas-relief figures consciously reference ancient Mesopotamian art, creating a unique blend of historical and contemporary artistic styles. The monument is intended to be read from right to left, like a verse of Arabic poetry, depicting events leading up to the 14 July Revolution and concluding with harmony following independence. It portrays historic Iraqi events up to the 1958 revolution led by Abdul Karim Qasim, marking the beginning of Republican rule in Iraq. The monument's multiple references and hidden layers of meaning have inspired artists across the Arab region. Surrounded by a landscaped memorial park, the Tahrir Monument provides a tranquil oasis amid the city's vibrant energy. It has been at the forefront of Iraq's social and political movements since 2003, witnessing pivotal moments in the nation's journey toward democracy. The square often serves as a gathering place for locals, especially during significant national events, with cultural performances and celebrations highlighting Iraq's rich heritage.
