Discover more about Kurd's Heritage Museum

The Kurd's Heritage Museum, situated on Mawlawi Street in Sulaymaniyah, is a treasure trove of Kurdish history and culture. The museum is located on the upper floor of the Farah Hotel, the oldest hotel in Sulaymaniyah, dating back to the early 1920s. The Directorate of Antiquities of Sulaymaniyah purchased the then-abandoned hotel in 2006 and completed extensive renovations in 2015. The same year, on Sulaymaniyah Foundation Day (November 14th), the Kurd's Heritage Museum officially opened. The museum's collection, started in 2000 by Erfan Othman and Barzan Qadir, encompasses a wide array of objects, including clothes, jewelry, books, manuscripts, furniture, household utensils, firearms, and rugs. While the museum has over 1,700 registered items, only around 200 are on display at a time. The majority of the artifacts originate from Sulaymaniyah and its surrounding areas. One unique aspect of the museum is its so-called Jewish Collection, which includes around 25 objects that belonged to Jewish people who lived in Sulaymaniyah before immigrating to Israel. Among these items are three rare Torahs and parts of a Mizrahi Torah, in addition to other objects made by Jewish craftsmen. Visiting the Kurd's Heritage Museum provides a close-up look at the daily lives of Kurdish families throughout history, offering a deeper understanding of their traditions and heritage.
