The Victory Arch, officially named the Swords of Qādisīyah, stands as a powerful symbol in the heart of Baghdad. Popularly known as the Hands of Victory or the Crossed Swords, this monument comprises two arches, each featuring a pair of massive hands emerging from the ground, firmly gripping crossed swords.Commissioned by Saddam Hussein, the Victory Arch commemorates Iraq's victory in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). The swords, 43 meters in length, are said to be modeled after those wielded by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, a key figure in the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah in 636 CE. This battle was a significant Arab victory over the Sasanian Empire. The monument's name, Swords of Qādisiyyah, alludes to this historical event, drawing a parallel between the ancient victory and the more recent conflict with Iran.The monument is located at the entrances to the Grand Festivities Square, a parade ground constructed to celebrate the Iran-Iraq War.
