Golden Strand: Achill Island's Coastal Gem
Discover Golden Strand on Achill Island: a scenic beach with golden sands, clear waters, and stunning views along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Golden Strand, nestled on the northern coast of Achill Island, County Mayo, is a captivating beach that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquility. Often called Barnyagappul Strand, meaning "the strand of the gap of the horses" in Gaelic, its name harkens back to when horses carried seaweed from the shore to fertilize fields. The beach itself is a large, sandy crescent offering an exposed feel compared to nearby Dugort Beach. The upper part of the beach consists of large pebbles, leading to gently sloping sand dunes that host diverse plant species. Golden Strand is known for its clear waters and is a Blue Flag beach, an award it received in 2024. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including swimming, walking, surfing, sailing, canoeing, and fishing. The beach marks the end of the scenic Atlantic Drive, making it an ideal place to relax after exploring Achill Island. From Golden Strand, experienced canoeists can follow the Blueway Kayak Trail along the coast to Dugort Beach, passing seal colonies and birdlife. While enjoying the beach, keep an eye out for local wildlife and native plants. The surrounding area offers additional attractions, including the Slievemore Deserted Village, Keem Bay, and Minaun Heights.
