Discover more about The Berkeley Library

The Library at Trinity College Dublin is more than just a repository of books; it's a statement of modern architectural confidence amidst the historical backdrop of Ireland's oldest university. Designed by Paul Koralek of ABK Architects, the library opened in 1967 and was initially known as the 'New Library'. In 1978, it was renamed after George Berkeley, a renowned philosopher and former Trinity College librarian. However, in April 2023, the university decided to dename the library due to Berkeley's history as a slave owner, and it is currently referred to as 'The Library' pending the selection of a new name. The Library's architecture is a striking example of Brutalist design, characterized by its concrete construction with timber shuttering marks and projecting vent hoods. The building's design was chosen for its ability to connect with existing structures, its monumental presence and its magnificent natural internal lighting. Inside, a central double-height reading room provides a space for study, with desks and gallery rails of solid white concrete. The library is part of a larger complex of three linked library buildings. Today, The Library continues to serve as a vital resource for students and researchers, housing a significant portion of Trinity College's extensive collection. While its name has changed, its architectural significance and importance to the university remain.
