Discover more about The Gaiety Theatre

The Gaiety Theatre, affectionately known as the 'Grand Old Lady of South King Street,' has been a cornerstone of Dublin's cultural life since its opening on November 27, 1871. Brothers John and Michael Gunn established the theatre, envisioning a venue for high-quality musical and dramatic entertainment. The opening night featured a double bill: Goldsmith's comedy 'She Stoops to Conquer' and a burlesque version of 'La Belle Sauvage'. The theatre's architecture, originally designed by C.J. Phipps in the style of a traditional European opera house, boasts a Venetian facade. Frank Matcham extended the theatre in 1883, adding baroque adornments. While the top gallery was removed in 1955 for safety reasons, the Gaiety retains many Victorian-era features. Substantial restorations in 2003 and 2007 improved patron comfort and updated the stage. Throughout its history, the Gaiety has hosted a wide array of performances, including opera, musicals, drama, revues, comedy, concerts, dance, and the annual Christmas pantomime, a tradition since 1874. The theatre has welcomed international stars like Julie Andrews, Spike Milligan, and Luciano Pavarotti, while also championing Irish talent such as Maureen Potter, The Dubliners, and The Chieftains. Today, the Gaiety continues to host a diverse program of events, solidifying its place as a premier venue for the performing arts in Dublin.
