Discover more about Rue Point Lighthouse

Rue Point Lighthouse, perched on the southern coast of Rathlin Island, marks the northern edge of the channel between the island and the mainland. This six-sided concrete tower has guided ships safely since 1921. Originally, a temporary light was erected in 1915 for the Admiralty, but it was destroyed in a storm. The current lighthouse was constructed between 1920 and 1921, incorporating a fog gun on its roof. For a time, two keepers were stationed at Rue Point, residing in a wooden hut nearby. The fog signal was discontinued in 1931 and replaced at Barr Point. In 1965, the lighthouse was converted to electric operation and is now monitored remotely from Rathlin East Lighthouse. Visitors can reach Rue Point Lighthouse via a scenic walk from Church Bay, the island's main settlement. The path leads through fields and past seals basking on the rocks, offering breathtaking views of the Northern Irish and Scottish coastlines.
