The Dark Hedges: A Mystical Avenue

Experience the enchanting Dark Hedges, a Game of Thrones filming location and one of Northern Ireland's most iconic natural wonders.

4.3

The Dark Hedges is a captivating avenue of mature beech trees located along Bregagh Road, near Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. Planted around 1775 by the Stuart family to create an impressive entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House, these trees have matured into a stunning, natural tunnel. Over 150 beech trees were originally planted, and around 90 remain today, their branches twisting and intertwining to form an atmospheric canopy. The effect is both dramatic and serene, drawing visitors from around the world. The site has gained further recognition as a filming location for the 'King's Road' in HBO's popular television series 'Game of Thrones,' enhancing its appeal as a must-see destination. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Dark Hedges is steeped in local legend. The most famous tale tells of the Grey Lady, a ghost said to wander the avenue, flitting between the trees before disappearing at the last beech. Some believe she is the spirit of James Stuart's daughter or a maid who met an untimely death, while others say she is a lost soul from a nearby abandoned graveyard. To protect the trees, the Dark Hedges section of Bregagh Road has been closed to vehicular traffic since 2017. Visitors can park nearby and walk along the avenue, taking in the beauty and tranquility of this unique landscape. Gracehill House, still standing today, operates as a bar, restaurant, wedding venue, and golf course, offering a chance to experience the estate's history.
