The Arthur Guinness Dwelling House, situated at St. James's Gate in The Liberties of Dublin, carries significant historical weight as the residence of Arthur Guinness, the founder of the world-renowned Guinness Brewery. Constructed in 1799, the house provided Guinness with a strategic location adjacent to his brewery, allowing him to closely monitor his business operations.Originally, St James's Gate was the western entrance to Dublin during the Middle Ages and a starting point for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. The area's association with brewing dates back to the 17th century. Arthur Guinness established his brewery here in 1759, signing a 9,000-year lease.The house itself evolved over time. After the Guinness family moved to more upscale residences in the city and countryside around 1850, the house was repurposed for office use by senior brewery management. A Doric portico, likely salvaged from Parnell Square, was added in the 1860s, along with an additional bay to create symmetry. While the interior has undergone changes, some historic features, such as the principal staircase, remain. Currently, there are plans to conserve and repurpose the building to house the Guinness Archive as part of a broader redevelopment of the St James's Gate Brewery, known as the Guinness Quarter.
