UCD Newman House: A Georgian Gem with Literary Echoes

UCD Newman House, situated on the south side of St Stephen's Green in Dublin, is a captivating historical site with significant architectural and literary importance. Comprising two elegant Georgian townhouses, Nos. 85 and 86, and a Victorian hall, it was once the original home of the Catholic University of Ireland, the precursor to University College Dublin. Founded in 1854, the university was named after Dr. John Henry Newman, a prominent theologian and scholar who served as its first rector.The buildings themselves are architectural treasures. No. 85, built in 1738, features exquisite stucco work by the Lafranchini brothers, while No. 86, constructed in 1765, showcases the distinctive plasterwork of Robert West. The interiors retain original chimneypieces, quality joinery, and elaborate rococo ceilings, making them prime examples of 18th-century craftsmanship in Dublin. The Saloon in No. 85 is particularly noteworthy, with its beautifully carved cherubs and large windows overlooking St Stephen's Green. The house was originally the residence of Richard Chapel Whaley, a notorious rake and gambler.Newman House also has strong literary connections. Gerard Manley Hopkins, the renowned Jesuit poet, served as Professor of Classics here from 1884 until his death in 1889. James Joyce, one of Ireland's most celebrated writers, studied at Newman House and earned his BA degree in 1902. The Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI), a partnership between UCD and the National Library of Ireland, is now located at Newman House, further solidifying its literary legacy.
