Located in Merrion Square Park, the Bernardo O'Higgins statue pays tribute to a key figure in Chile's independence. Bernardo O'Higgins, born in Chile in 1778 and died in Peru in 1842, was a leader, Captain General, and Statesman. The Republic of Chile gifted the statue to Ireland in 1995. Merrion Square itself is one of Dublin's grandest Georgian squares, dating back to 1762. Three sides of the square are lined with Georgian redbrick houses. The park within the square was once private, opening to the public in the 1970s. Today, it features sculptures, a floral garden, and the Rutland Memorial. The square has been home to many famous residents, including Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats.
