From St. Stephen's Green, walk east along the south side of the Green. Continue onto Merrion Street Lower, then turn right onto Merrion Square West. The statue will be in Merrion Square Park on your left. The walk is approximately 7 minutes.

Public Transport

Take the DART or train to Dublin Pearse station. Exit the station and walk west on Westland Row, then turn left onto Merrion Street Lower. Turn right onto Merrion Square West. The statue will be in Merrion Square Park on your left. The walk is approximately 5 minutes. A TFI 90-minute fare is €2.00 for adults, €1.00 for young adults/students, and €0.65 for children using a Leap Card.

From Dublin city center, a taxi to Merrion Square will take approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxi fares in Dublin start at €4.80, with a rate of €1.71 per km. A typical fare from the city center will range from €8 to €15.

Overview

Located in Merrion Square Park, the Bernardo O'Higgins statue pays tribute to a key figure in Chile's independence. Bernardo O'Higgins, born in Chile in 1778 and died in Peru in 1842, was a leader, Captain General, and Statesman. The Republic of Chile gifted the statue to Ireland in 1995. Merrion Square itself is one of Dublin's grandest Georgian squares, dating back to 1762. Three sides of the square are lined with Georgian redbrick houses. The park within the square was once private, opening to the public in the 1970s. Today, it features sculptures, a floral garden, and the Rutland Memorial. The square has been home to many famous residents, including Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats.
