Getting There

Driving

From Cork Airport, take the N71 to Bantry. From Bantry, follow the signs for the Sheep's Head peninsula. Continue along the coastal road, passing through Durrus, Ahakista and Kilcrohane. Drive as far as Tooreen where the road ends. There is a car park, seasonal cafe and public toilets available. From the car park, the lighthouse is approximately a 1 mile (1.5km) walk.
Walking

From the car park at Tooreen, follow the well-marked footpath towards the lighthouse. The path is approximately 1 mile (1.5km) long and crosses rocky terrain. The walk to the lighthouse should take approximately 20-30 minutes. Be aware of changing weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear.

Sheep's Head, also known as Muntervary, is the westernmost point of the Sheep's Head peninsula, nestled between Bantry Bay and Dunmanus Bay in County Cork. The most popular of these is the Lighthouse Loop, a 4.2km trail leading to the peninsula's tip.The Sheep's Head Lighthouse, built in 1968, stands as a beacon at the end of the peninsula. It was constructed to guide oil tankers into the Whiddy Island terminal. Though the lighthouse itself is not staffed, visitors can walk to it and climb its stairs, enjoying the wild Atlantic views. The lighthouse emits three flashes every 15 seconds and has a range of 18 nautical miles.Beyond its natural beauty, Sheep's Head boasts a rich cultural heritage. The peninsula is dotted with historic tombs, monuments, and the remains of an old copper mine, offering glimpses into its past.
