Discover more about Donadea Castle

Donadea Castle, nestled within the serene Donadea Forest Park, offers a captivating journey through Irish history. The site's story began with Anglo-Norman settlers in the 12th century, who established a manor house. The Aylmer family, who acquired the lands in 1558, significantly shaped the castle and its surrounding demesne. The oldest part of the existing structure is a tower built in 1581 by Gerald Aylmer, which was completed in 1624. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed conflicts and rebellions, withstanding sieges and fires. Gerald George Aylmer, the 8th Baronet, undertook extensive renovations in the 19th century, including remodeling the castle's front in a Gothic style and constructing a high wall around the demesne. He also added gate lodges, a grand entrance known as Lime Avenue, a man-made lake, and landscaped gardens. Caroline Aylmer, the last of the family to reside in the castle, passed away in 1935. The castle was de-roofed in the late 1950s and fell into ruin. Today, visitors can explore the castle remains, along with other historical features within the park, including St. Peter's Church, walled gardens, an ice house, and a 9/11 memorial. The park also offers various walking trails, a lake, and a café, making it a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts.
