Car
If you are driving, start by navigating to Route 1 (the main highway in Israel). From Jerusalem, take Route 1 towards the Dead Sea. After approximately 30 kilometers, turn onto Route 90 towards Ein Gedi and continue for about 15 kilometers. Look for the signs directing you to the Mar Saba Monastery. You will need to turn off the main road and follow the dirt road leading to the monastery. Parking is available near the entrance, but remember that the road can be steep and winding.
Public Transportation
To reach Mar Saba Monastery via public transportation, take a bus from Jerusalem to the town of Bethlehem (Bus 21 or 24 from the central bus station). Once in Bethlehem, you may need to take a taxi for the remaining part of the journey, as direct public transport to the monastery is limited. Inform the taxi driver that you want to go to Mar Saba Monastery; the drive will take approximately 30 minutes. Be prepared to negotiate the fare, which can range from 70 to 100 NIS depending on the time of day and your negotiation skills.
Hiking/Walking
For adventurous travelers, there is a hiking trail that leads to Mar Saba Monastery from the surrounding areas of the Judean Desert. If you are staying in nearby areas such as the town of Tekoa, you can take a marked trail that leads directly to the monastery. Ensure you bring plenty of water and wear appropriate hiking shoes, as the terrain can be rugged. The hike can take about 2-3 hours depending on your pace.
