Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are starting from the central Piazza del Comune, head southeast towards Via Santa Chiara. Continue straight down Via Santa Chiara until you reach the intersection with Via San Francesco. Turn left onto Via San Francesco and continue until you reach the end of the street. There, you will find the Basilica di San Francesco. From the Basilica, take the path leading down towards the lower part of Assisi, which will take you through Via della Rocca. As you walk, follow the signs towards Porta Romana. After about 15 minutes of walking, you will start to see the ancient walls of Assisi. Continue straight, and you will arrive at Porta Romana, which serves as an entrance to the historic center of the town.

    From the Assisi train station, exit the station and turn left onto Via Giovanni XXIII. Follow this road as it curves to the right and becomes Via Matteotti. Continue straight along Via Matteotti for about 20 minutes until you reach the historical center of Assisi. You will see signs directing you towards Porta Romana. When you reach the ancient city walls, you will find Porta Romana on your left. This walk is approximately 1.5 kilometers and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
