The Resti dell'area Archeologica del Laterano offer a captivating journey beneath the surface of Rome, unveiling the foundations upon which the magnificent Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano was built. This archaeological area preserves the remains of structures that predate the basilica, offering a unique glimpse into the city's layered past. The site reveals remnants of affluent Roman houses from the early imperial era, showcasing intricate paintings, mosaics, and marble work. A perfectly preserved staircase hints at the grandeur of these ancient dwellings. These houses were demolished in 193 AD when Emperor Septimius Severus ordered the construction of new barracks for the Equites Singulares, the emperor's elite cavalry bodyguards. The barracks consisted of small rooms, of which walls with red plaster, thresholds and doorposts still remain. At the center of the barracks was a space dedicated to the cult of the emperor. After the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, Constantine abolished the Equites Singulares and built the Basilica del Salvatore in the area. Excavations during construction work around the Lateran complex have unearthed many of the areas that can be explored today. Walking through the archaeological site, visitors can appreciate the tangible connection to Rome's imperial past and the transformations that shaped the city over centuries.
