4.5

The Tombs of the Via Latina, or *Tombe di Via Latina* in Italian, is an archaeological park that preserves a section of the ancient Via Latina and the Roman tombs that line it. Established in 1879 after significant Roman remains were unearthed, the park provides a unique look into the funerary practices and artistic achievements of the Roman Empire. The Via Latina itself was an important Roman road connecting Rome to Capua. The section within the park still has its original basalt paving, revealing the engineering prowess of the Romans. Walking along this ancient road, you'll see the deep grooves left by countless carts and wagons. The tombs, primarily from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, showcase a range of architectural styles and decorative elements. Among the most notable are the Barberini Tomb (Sepolcro Barberini), named after the family that once owned the land, and the Tomb of the Valerii (Sepolcro dei Valeri). The Barberini Tomb features two stories above ground and an underground burial chamber, adorned with frescoes and stucco work. The Tomb of the Valerii is distinguished by its elaborate white stucco medallions depicting Dionysian themes. Visitors can explore the well-preserved interiors of some tombs, discovering vibrant frescoes, intricate stucco decorations, and mosaic floors. These artistic details offer insights into Roman beliefs about death and the afterlife. The park also contains the remains of a Roman villa and a basilica dedicated to St. Stephen, adding further historical depth to the site. The Tombs of the Via Latina offer a peaceful escape from the bustling city of Rome. The lush landscape surrounding the tombs enhances the historical charm of the site, inviting contemplation and appreciation of the rich history embedded in the very ground.
