Toirano Cave Travel Guide

The Toirano Cave, located near the village of Toirano in Liguria, Italy, offers a fascinating journey through geological time and prehistoric life. This karst cave system comprises several interconnected caves, with the Grotta della Bàsura (Witch's Cave) and the Grotta di Santa Lucia Inferiore being the most visited.Discovered in 1950, the Grotta della Bàsura is renowned for its remarkable archaeological finds. Within its chambers lie the skeletal remains of Ursus spelaeus, the cave bear, which hibernated here tens of thousands of years ago. Footprints, handprints, and knee prints of Upper Paleolithic humans, dating back approximately 14,000 years, mark the passage of early explorers. The cave also features unique clay balls attached to the walls, believed to be remnants of ritualistic practices.The Grotta di Santa Lucia Inferiore is adorned with delicate aragonite crystals, forming intricate floral patterns on the walls. Impressive stalactites, also covered in aragonite, add to the cave's visual splendor. The guided tour connects the two caves via an artificial tunnel, creating a one-way route that immerses visitors in the cave's wonders. The tour lasts approximately 70 minutes and covers a distance of 1300 meters. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 16°C and a humidity of 98%, so dressing accordingly is recommended.
