Snow Farm: Preserving Winter in Livigno

Livigno's Snow Farm is a pioneering project focused on conserving snow through the summer months for use in cross-country skiing and other events. Since 2016, Livigno has been a leader in snow farming techniques, storing approximately 80,000 cubic meters of snow annually. The stored snow is used to create a cross-country ski track in October, allowing professional teams to train at high altitudes. The snow is preserved using sawdust and geotextile sheets to insulate it and reflect sunlight. This method reduces melting to less than 20% of the total volume. The snow farm ensures Livigno can host events like the '1K Shot' and 'Gara da li Contrada' in the summer. The Snow Farm project is part of a broader energy-saving strategy, using digital mapping and satellite technology to monitor snow depth and efficiently distribute snow. This initiative allows Livigno to maintain its reputation as a premier winter sports destination year-round.
