Walking
From the Lucca city center, head towards Via Fillungo, the main shopping street. Continue straight until you reach the end of this street, where it meets Piazza San Michele. From there, take a left onto Via degli Angeli. Walk straight until you reach the city walls. Cross the walls and descend towards the train station area. From the station, you will need to take a train to Rome Termini, which is the closest major train station to Vatican City. Once at Rome Termini, follow the signs for the Metro and take Line A towards Battistini. Get off at the Ottaviano stop, which is the closest metro station to Vatican City. Exit the station and walk towards the Vatican, following the signs. You will see the Apostolic Palace as you approach St. Peter's Square.

Start at Lucca's main bus station, located near the city center. Take a bus to Pisa Central Station (Pisa Centrale). Once at Pisa Centrale, transfer to a train heading to Roma Termini. After arriving at Roma Termini, find the Metro station and take Line A towards Battistini. Alight at the Ottaviano stop. From there, it’s a short walk towards Vatican City. Follow the signs directing you towards St. Peter's Basilica, which is adjacent to the Apostolic Palace.
