Discover more about Castello dei Vicari

Perched atop the Pisan hills in the charming village of Lari, the Castello dei Vicari stands as a testament to Tuscany's captivating history. With origins tracing back to the Etruscan era, the castle's strategic location made it a focal point in medieval conflicts between Pisa and Florence. The first official record of the castle dates back to 1067. In 1406, the castle and surrounding area fell under Florentine rule, transforming Lari into the seat of the Florentine Vicariate. For over four centuries, the castle served as the administrative center for a significant portion of the Province of Pisa. The Florentine governors, or Vicars, resided here, leaving their mark on the castle's architecture and governance. The castle's walls and courtyard showcase the coats of arms of noble families, including the Medici, Pitti, and Strozzi. Inside the castle, visitors can explore the Sala Leopoldo, adorned with a Florentine iris fresco and the Strozzi family coat of arms. The castle also houses former prison cells with prisoners' writings etched into the walls. The Dynamic Museum of the Vicariate allows visitors to delve into the history of the castle, the Vicariate, and Lari through the centuries. Today, the Castello dei Vicari is managed by the Cultural Association “Il Castello,” which organizes cultural events and welcomes visitors. The castle offers panoramic views of the Arno Valley and surrounding countryside.
