Discover more about Cattedrale di Pisa

The Cattedrale di Pisa, also known as the Duomo di Pisa, is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Located in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square), it is the oldest structure in the square, predating the Baptistery and the Leaning Tower. Construction began in 1064 by architect Buscheto, showcasing a unique Pisan Romanesque style that blends classical, Lombard-Emilian, Byzantine, and Islamic elements. The cathedral's exterior is adorned with multicolored marble, mosaics, and bronze objects, reflecting Pisa's international presence during its peak. The interior features a central nave flanked by two side aisles on each side, with a transept and apse in three naves, all covered in white and black marble. The 17th-century coffered ceiling, crafted by Domenico and Bartolomeo Atticciati, displays the Medici coat of arms. Inside, visitors can admire the Pulpit by Giovanni Pisano, an extensive 14th-century sculpture with scenes from the Life of Christ. The large apsidal mosaic of Christ Enthroned between the Virgin and St. John, particularly the face of St. John drawn by Cimabue in 1302, is another highlight. The bronze doors, especially the Porta di San Ranieri by Bonanno Pisano, offer a glimpse into early medieval artistry. The cathedral's design, with its raised arches and alternating bands of black and white marble, has often been compared to great Islamic mosques.
