    Discover more about Devil's Bridge

Ponte della Maddalena, more famously known as the Devil's Bridge, is an iconic and unusual medieval bridge that spans the Serchio River near Borgo a Mozzano in Tuscany, Italy. Its construction dates back to the 11th century, commissioned by Countess Matilda of Canossa, though it was later renovated in the 14th century. The bridge served as a vital crossing point on the Via Francigena, a medieval pilgrimage route to Rome. The bridge's nickname comes from a local legend. As the story goes, the bridge's construction was proving difficult, and the master builder made a pact with the Devil to complete it in exchange for the soul of the first to cross. Outsmarting the Devil, the builder sent a pig across the bridge instead. Enraged, the Devil plunged into the Serchio River. The bridge's architecture is notable for its asymmetrical arches, with the central arch being the tallest and widest. This unique design, along with its longevity, has made it a subject of fascination and a symbol of the region. The bridge is open to the public and offers picturesque views of the Serchio Valley.
