Discover more about Domus Foundation Galilaeana

Located on Via Santa Maria in Pisa, the Domus Galilaeana is more than just a library; it's an institute dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of science, with a special focus on Galileo Galilei. Established in 1938 and officially recognized in 1941, the Domus Galilaeana was conceived to celebrate the centenary of the First Meeting of Italian Scientists held in Pisa in 1839. Giovanni Gentile and the Italian Society for the Progress of Sciences spearheaded its formation. The Domus Galilaeana is situated in the former Palazzo della Specola, which once housed Tuscany's first public astronomical observatory, constructed in 1734. Although the original observatory tower was demolished in the early 19th century due to stability issues, the building retains its historical significance. The institute's library boasts an impressive collection of over 40,000 books and pamphlets focused on the history of science. Among its treasures are Galileo's manuscripts, including a letter from 1604 containing the earliest known formulation of the law of falling bodies. The Domus also holds the papers of Antonio Pacinotti, inventor of the dynamo-electric motor, and research materials from physicists Enrico Fermi and Ettore Majorana. While not a traditional museum, the Domus Galilaeana has, throughout its history, safeguarded scientific instruments on behalf of other institutions. These include instruments of Enrico Fermi and equipment belonging to Antonio Pacinotti. Today, the Domus Galilaeana continues to promote studies in the history of science through its extensive archive and library. It also hosts lectures, seminars, and temporary exhibitions.
