Discover more about Isola Santa

Isola Santa, a gem in the Garfagnana region, is a village seemingly plucked from a fairytale. Located in the province of Lucca, this enchanting village sits at 550 meters above sea level, surrounded by the majestic Apuan Alps. Its reflection shimmers in the artificial lake created by a dam built in 1949, adding to its ethereal charm. Originally founded in the Middle Ages as a hospitale (inn) for pilgrims and travelers crossing the Apuan Alps between Versilia and Garfagnana, Isola Santa provided respite along the challenging Foce di Mosceta route. The construction of the dam to generate hydroelectric power led to the partial submersion of the village, including the Mosceta Mill and a medieval arched bridge, forcing residents to abandon their homes. In recent years, Isola Santa has undergone significant restoration, transforming into a welcoming albergo diffuso (scattered hotel). The village now boasts charming stone houses with slate roofs, high-quality restaurants, and a serene atmosphere that attracts nature lovers, photographers, and history enthusiasts. The Church of San Jacopo, dating back to 1260, stands as a testament to the village's rich past. Visitors can explore the surrounding woodland and forest trails, offering easy walking routes and breathtaking views. For the more adventurous, hiking trails lead to Monte Sumbra, Pania della Croce, and other peaks in the Apuan Alps. The lake is also a popular spot for fishing, particularly for the prized trote fario (brown trout). Every ten years, the lake is drained for maintenance, revealing the submerged bridge and mill, creating a hauntingly beautiful landscape. This event attracts photographers eager to capture the eerie beauty of the exposed structures.
