Discover more about Grotta del Vento

Grotta del Vento, or Wind Cave, is a captivating natural wonder nestled in the heart of the Apuan Alps in Garfagnana, Tuscany. Known since the 19th century, the cave derives its name from the strong wind that rushes from its depths. This wind is created by the two entrances at different altitudes, with the lower entrance at 642 meters above sea level and the upper one at 1400 meters. The temperature inside the cave remains a constant 10.7°C (51°F) year-round. The cave system formed over millions of years through the erosion of limestone rock by water, creating underground rivers, waterfalls, and impressive formations. In 1898, local youths first explored the cave, and systematic exploration began in the 1960s. Today, visitors can explore the cave through three distinct itineraries, each offering a unique perspective on this subterranean world. The first itinerary showcases a crystal lake and colorful limestone formations. The second descends into the 'Abyss of the Giants' and the 'Hall of Voices'. The third includes a 90-meter vertical shaft and an underground canyon. Knowledgeable guides lead tours in multiple languages, sharing insights into the cave's geology and history. The cave also has a museum and souvenir shop.
