The Lungarni of Pisa are the city's stunning riverside promenades that hug the Arno River, offering a captivating blend of history, architecture, and vibrant culture. These streets, whose name translates to 'along the Arno', are lined with elegant palaces, historic churches, and charming cafes, creating a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls and exploration. Once the heart of Pisa's city center, the Lungarni were favored by wealthy families who built their residences here. Though reconstructed in 1871, losing some of their original stairways and steps, they retain their historical charm and remain a focal point of Pisan life. The Lungarni have also inspired famous poets and writers such as Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. The Lungarni come alive during the Luminara di San Ranieri, a spectacular event held on June 16th, the eve of Pisa's patron saint's feast day. The buildings along the river are illuminated with thousands of candles, creating a magical and unforgettable scene. Today, the Lungarni also host important museums, creating a 'museum system' along the Arno River.
