Discover more about Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo, or Piazza dei Miracoli, is more than just a square; it's a journey through centuries of art, religion, and history. Located north of the Arno River in Pisa, Tuscany, this nearly nine-hectare site showcases an ensemble of architectural marvels that define the Pisan Romanesque style. The Duomo, or Pisa Cathedral (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), stands as the centerpiece of the Piazza. Its construction began in the 11th century, and the cathedral is an exquisite example of Pisan Romanesque architecture, featuring a stunning white marble facade, intricate bronze doors, and elaborate mosaics. Inside, visitors can admire masterpieces of medieval and Renaissance art. Just a few steps away from the Cathedral stands the Baptistery of Pisa (Battistero di San Giovanni), a large circular building also constructed in white marble. The Baptistery is the largest in Italy, and its acoustics are remarkable. Its Romanesque architecture is capped with a Gothic dome, and the interior houses a pulpit sculpted by Nicola Pisano. Of course, no visit to Piazza del Duomo is complete without experiencing the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Campanile). This iconic bell tower, which began construction in 1173, started to lean shortly after construction due to unstable soil. Today, it stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, drawing visitors who marvel at its precarious angle. Completing the ensemble is the Camposanto Monumentale, an enclosed monumental cemetery that borders the northern edge of the Piazza. This serene space is said to be built upon soil brought back from Golgotha during the Crusades. The Camposanto is lined with marble arcades and was once filled with impressive frescoes, many of which were damaged during World War II but are gradually being restored.
