Discover more about Wolf Gorge

The Forra del Lupo, also known as the Wolf's Gorge, is a remarkable historical site located near Serrada in the Trentino region of Italy. This military walkway, featuring an Austro-Hungarian trench, stretches from Serrada to the Dosso del Sommo fort (Werk Serrada) at 1,670 meters. Constructed between 1914 and 1915, it formed a crucial part of the Tiroler Widerstandslinie, designed to resist Italian advances during World War I. The gorge itself is a narrow passage through high rock walls, characterized by ravines, deep gorges, and stairways carved into the rock. The Austro-Hungarians also referred to it as the Dragon Gorge (Drachenschlucht). The path was initially defended by Standschützen units, who successfully repelled Italian attacks until the Austro-Hungarian offensive in May 1916. After the war, the gorge fell into disrepair until its restoration in 2015. Today, the Forra del Lupo is integrated into the "Trentino Memory Park" as hiking itinerary SAT 137. The 4.6 km trail presents a moderately challenging walk with a 460-meter elevation gain, suitable for families with older children. Along the way, hikers can explore the historic trench, observation points, and shelters used by soldiers during the war. The route offers panoramic views of the Terragnolo Valley, the Borcola Pass, and the Pasubio mountains.
