Originally, the washhouse was primarily used by men of the Washworker's Guild to wash linens for affluent families. Over time, women took over these duties, using the site until the advent of modern washing machines. The washerwomen would kneel on wooden platforms, called 'brellin', while they scrubbed clothes on the stone stalls, using a mix of ashes, soap and soda.Today, the Ancient Lavoir stands as a beautifully preserved testament to Milan's working-class history. Visitors can admire the well-maintained stone basins and cobblestone paths, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. The site offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city, inviting reflection on the lives and labors of those who once gathered here.
