Basilica di Sant'Eustorgio: A Milanese Pilgrimage Through History

The Basilica di Sant'Eustorgio, located on Piazza Sant'Eustorgio in Milan, stands as a historic and architecturally significant landmark. Founded in the 4th century, the basilica has evolved through various restorations, reflecting different eras. Its origins are linked to Eustorgius I, the Bishop of Milan, who brought the relics of the Three Magi to the city in 344 AD. For centuries, it served as a vital stop for pilgrims journeying to Rome or the Holy Land. Today's basilica showcases a blend of architectural styles due to numerous restorations over the centuries. Remnants of an early Christian church can be seen beneath the apse, while the apsidal area and some capitals reveal Romanesque elements. The Portinari Chapel is one of the first examples of Renaissance art in Milan. Of particular note is the Portinari Chapel, a masterpiece of the early Renaissance, housing the Ark of Saint Peter Martyr by Giovanni di Balduccio.
