Discover more about Brera Botanical Garden

The Brera Botanical Garden, a hidden gem in the heart of Milan, provides a peaceful retreat from the city's bustling streets. Located in the Brera district, adjacent to the Palazzo Brera, the garden's history dates back to the 14th century when it served as a space for meditation and cultivation for the Humiliati monks and later the Jesuits. In 1775, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria established it as a botanical garden to serve students of medicine and pharmacology. Today, the garden maintains its original 18th-century layout, featuring rectangular flowerbeds, two elliptical ponds, and a tranquil arboretum. Visitors can explore diverse plant collections, including medicinal herbs, dye plants, and rare species. The garden also hosts seasonal events, educational workshops, and guided tours. The Brera Botanical Garden is part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, and the Network of Botanical Gardens of the Lombardy Region. The garden's unique atmosphere provides a welcome respite from the urban environment. It's a place to wander along the paths, admire the architecture of the Palazzo Brera, and enjoy a quiet moment surrounded by nature. The garden is managed by the University of Milan and serves as a museum and a center for research and education.
