Chiesa di San Fedele: A Sanctuary of Art and Faith in Milan

Nestled in the heart of Milan, the Chiesa di San Fedele is a captivating blend of art, history, and religious significance. Commissioned by Charles Borromeo and designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi, construction began in 1569, with consecration in 1579, though work continued for another century. This Jesuit church is a prime example of Counter-Reformation architecture, characterized by its single nave and monumental proportions. The church's exterior features a stone façade crowned by a classical pediment. Inside, granite columns support a single nave, flanked by chapels and confessionals. The presbytery was extended in the 17th century by Francesco Maria Richino, who also designed the sacristy. Artworks include Simone Peterzano's Pietà, Giovanni Battista Crespi's St. Ignatius, and Lucio Fontana's Sacred Heart. The "Chapel of the Ballerinas" holds a special image of the Madonna, once visited by dancers from La Scala. Today, San Fedele hosts social, cultural, and artistic events under the Fondazione Culturale San Fedele. Since 2014, a museum itinerary showcases contemporary works, creating a dialogue between art and faith. The Museo San Fedele includes the crypt, sacristy, and a gallery of paintings and reliquaries. A statue of Alessandro Manzoni, who lived nearby and died after a fall exiting mass at San Fedele, stands in the piazza outside.
