MuRAC: Unveiling Como's Air-Raid Shelter Museum

MuRAC (Museo Rifugi Antiaerei Como) provides a unique historical experience, transporting visitors back to the era of World War II. Situated in the basement of the Italian Red Cross headquarters in Como, the museum centers around a remarkably well-preserved air-raid and gas shelter dating back to 1937.The museum's story is intertwined with the history of the site itself. Originally, the S. Anna Hospital stood in this location since the 15th century. In 1932, the hospital moved, and in 1935, the Municipality of Como donated the land to the Red Cross for their headquarters. Construction was completed in 1937, including the air-raid shelter built in accordance with the regulations of the time. These regulations mandated that all new residential buildings include an air-raid shelter.MuRAC showcases documentation and artifacts related to air-raid shelters and air defense during both World War I and World War II.
