Palazzo Dugnani: A Baroque Jewel in Milan

Palazzo Dugnani, situated on Via Daniele Manin, stands as a magnificent example of Baroque architecture in Milan. Originally built in the 17th century for the Cavalchini family, it was later acquired by the Casati family in 1730, who commissioned significant expansions. In 1753, the Dugnani family took ownership, transforming the palace into a hub for literary salons and cultural gatherings, most notably hosting the Accademia dei Fenici from 1762. The palace's interior is adorned with exquisite decorations, including mythological frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, dating back to circa 1731. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the life of Scipio Africanus, showcase Tiepolo's mastery and add to the palace's artistic significance. The central panel illustrates the Apotheosis of Scipio, while side panels portray events such as the death of Sophonisba and Scipio's alliance with Masinissa. Throughout its history, Palazzo Dugnani has served various purposes. In 1837, Count Giovanni Vimercati, who inherited the property, established a Natural History Museum within its walls. Later, in 1846, the Municipality of Milan acquired the palace and housed the Civic Museum of Natural History there before it was moved to Corso Venezia. For many years, it was also home to the Alessandro Manzoni Civic School for Women. Today, Palazzo Dugnani hosts the Cinema Museum, the Serre workshops, and various temporary exhibitions, continuing its legacy as a center for culture and art. The palace is next to the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens.
