Palazzo Serbelloni: A Neoclassical Gem in Milan

Palazzo Serbelloni, located at Corso Venezia 16, is a Neoclassical palace that embodies Milan's rich history and architectural elegance. Constructed in the late 18th century for Duke Gabrio Serbelloni, the palace was designed to enhance the prestige of the Serbelloni family, one of Milan's most illustrious aristocratic families. The palace's design is credited to Simone Cantoni, a student of Vanvitelli, who created a facade that exemplifies neoclassical taste through simplified architectural elements and a return to ancient forms. The palace has been a stage for significant historical events. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte resided here for three months, leading to the naming of the main stateroom as “Sala Napoleonica”. Other notable guests include Austrian Chancellor Klemens von Metternich, Napoleon III, and King Vittorio Emanuele II Savoia. The palace's history also includes a tragic chapter; in 1943, air raids caused extensive damage, destroying the renowned library containing 75,000 books and frescoes by Giuliano Traballesi. Today, Palazzo Serbelloni hosts a variety of prestigious events, including artistic and professional functions, award ceremonies, fashion shows, exhibitions, and book presentations. The interiors retain some of their original splendor, with the first floor featuring a Neoclassical hall originally decorated by Giuliano Traballesi. The facade is adorned with an alto-relievo by Francesco Carabelli, depicting Sant’Ambrogio against his enemies. The palace also features a lovely court and a magnificent garden, adding to its allure. Visitors can appreciate the palace's architecture and historical significance by attending events or exhibitions held within its walls. The building stands as one of the finest examples of Milanese Neoclassical architecture, with its distinctive portico on the façade.
