Discover more about Arco della Pace

The Arco della Pace, a majestic triumphal arch in Milan, narrates a compelling story of shifting political tides and enduring artistic vision. Originally commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807 to celebrate his military victories, the arch was initially named Arco di Porta Sempione, marking the city entrance from the Simplon Road. However, Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1814 halted construction. In 1826, under the rule of Austrian Emperor Francis I, construction resumed, with the arch rededicated to commemorate the peace established at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The arch was finally completed in 1838. Designed by Luigi Cagnola, and later completed by Francesco Peverelli and Francesco Londonio after Cagnola's death, the 25-meter-high monument showcases a neoclassical style with three arches supported by Corinthian marble columns. The arch is adorned with sculptures and bas-reliefs. The main facade faces south, featuring allegorical figures symbolizing peace and military achievements. Atop the arch, a bronze statue depicts a chariot drawn by six horses, representing the goddess of Peace. According to legend, the horses were positioned to face France as a sign of mockery after Napoleon's fall. Situated in Piazza Sempione, the Arco della Pace connects Corso Sempione with Parco Sempione, offering a vibrant atmosphere for visitors. Nearby attractions include the Sforzesco Castle and Torre Branca.
