5

The Sentiero Azzurro, or Blue Trail, near Mergozzo, Italy, is a picturesque hiking path that encircles the serene Lake Mergozzo. Unlike its larger neighbor, Lake Maggiore, Lake Mergozzo maintains a tranquil environment due to the prohibition of motorboats, making it ideal for peaceful walks and hikes. The trail itself is well-maintained and relatively easy, stretching approximately 8 kilometers and typically taking around 2.5 hours to complete. Starting from the Piazza Vittorio Veneto promenade, marked by a 400-year-old elm tree, the path meanders through charming villages, past stone walls, and alongside wooded areas, offering continuous views of the lake. The route is marked with blue dots, guiding hikers along its course. Along the Sentiero Azzurro, hikers can explore the historical village of Montorfano, known for its well-preserved stone architecture and the Church of San Giovanni. The trail also provides access to the slopes of Montorfano, a granite mountain offering panoramic views of the region. The area is rich in history, with evidence of settlements dating back to Neolithic times. Lake Mergozzo itself was once connected to Lake Maggiore but was separated over time by sediment deposits from the Toce River. Today, it stands as one of the cleanest lakes in Italy, perfect for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The absence of industrial pollution and a ban on motorboats contribute to its pristine condition.
