Contucci Winery: A Noble Montepulciano Legacy
Experience centuries of winemaking tradition at Contucci Winery in Montepulciano, home of the renowned Vino Nobile.
Nestled in the heart of Montepulciano, just steps from the Piazza Grande, the Contucci Winery stands as a testament to a winemaking legacy that spans over 40 generations. Since 1008, the Contucci family has cultivated vines and crafted exceptional wines, contributing significantly to the fame of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The estate itself is a sight to behold, featuring a mansion constructed in the 16th century by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder and adorned with exquisite frescoes by Andrea Pozzo. The palace has a rich history, having once been the residence of Pope Julius III and Grand Duke Ferdinand I. The Contucci cellars, dating back to the 13th century, are part of the city's oldest walls and are still fully operational. These cellars, spread over three floors, house concrete and steel vats, as well as oak barrels used for aging the wines. The underground area, with rooms carved into the rock and connected by tunnels, is particularly fascinating. Today, the Contucci estate covers 170 hectares, with 21 hectares dedicated to vineyards that grow native grape varieties. The winery produces approximately 100,000 bottles annually, including Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano, Sansovino, Vin Santo, and Bianco della Contessa. Visitors are welcome to explore the winery, wander through the cellars, and taste the wines. A wine bar opened in July 2021, offering another space to enjoy Contucci's wines.
