Discover more about Ercolani Cellars - Underground City and Museum

Venture into the depths of Montepulciano's past at Ercolani Cellars, a family-owned winery with a fascinating secret: an extensive underground city. Founded in 1988, the Ercolani family carries on a winemaking tradition that began in the 1940s, now managing over 150 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, and truffle grounds. The highlight of a visit to Ercolani Cellars is the exploration of its subterranean tunnels, a network dating back to the 15th century. These tunnels reveal Montepulciano's hidden history, with passages leading past Etruscan tombs, ancient wells (where tradition holds that tossing a coin brings good fortune), and the cellars where Vino Nobile di Montepulciano matures. Within the underground city, the Ercolani family has also created small museums displaying artifacts related to the history of the cellars, the art of viticulture, fossils, and even old torture instruments. The experience culminates in a tasting of Ercolani's wines, including the renowned Vino Nobile, along with local specialties like cheeses, olive oil, and truffle products. This blend of history, culture, and exquisite flavors makes Ercolani Cellars a must-see destination in Montepulciano.
