The Loggia della Mercanzia, also called Loggia dei Mercanti or Loggia di San Paolo, stands at the Croce del Travaglio, the intersection of Siena's three main streets: Via Banchi di Sopra, Via Banchi di Sotto, and Via di Città. This location was historically significant as it marked a key point on the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route. Designed by Sano di Matteo and Pietro del Minella, its construction spanned from 1417 to 1444, showcasing a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. The loggia served as a center for trade and commerce in Siena, reflecting the city's economic power during the 15th century. The building's design features arches supported by decorated pillars.
