Discover more about Baia di Ieranto

Baia di Ieranto, whose name derives from the Greek word “Ieros” meaning sacred, is a hidden gem nestled on the eastern tip of the Sorrento Peninsula. This secluded bay, part of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, is steeped in history and mythology, believed to be the home of the Sirens who tempted Ulysses in Homer's Odyssey. The bay's history is a tapestry of myths, agricultural traditions, and industrial heritage. Once a hub for citrus cultivation, the area still features terraced olive groves showcasing ancient techniques. Defensive towers, such as Montalto and Campanella, stand as reminders of battles against Saracen pirates in the 16th century. In the early 20th century, a limestone quarry operated here until the 1950s, leaving an industrial footprint. Today, Baia di Ieranto is a protected natural area managed by Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), which ensures the preservation of its cultural and natural heritage. Visitors can explore the bay via a moderately challenging hiking trail that rewards them with panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. The trail winds through olive groves and Mediterranean scrub, passing remnants of the old quarry. The pristine pebble beach and crystal-clear waters of the bay are perfect for swimming and quiet reflection. The large beach is not accessible by land, but it can be seen from the sea. Visitors can also explore the remains of a Roman villa dating back to the 2nd century and the restored Montalto tower. The area is rich in fauna and flora, with over 100 species of birds and diverse marine life.
