Discover more about Basilica San Giovanni Maggiore

Basilica San Giovanni Maggiore, nestled in the heart of Naples, is a captivating journey through time, with its foundations dating back to the 4th century. Legend says Emperor Constantine ordered its construction to thank God for saving his daughter Costanza from a shipwreck. The basilica may have been built upon a pre-existing Roman temple dedicated to Hercules or Hadrian, with an inscription dating back to 324 AD. Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone numerous reconstructions, bearing witness to Naples' tumultuous history. In the 6th century, it was transformed into a Byzantine-style basilica. A Baroque renovation followed in 1656, led by Dionisio Lazzari, who designed the cupola completed in 1685. Earthquakes in 1635, 1732, and 1805 necessitated further restoration work. The basilica served as an important religious center before the construction of the Naples Cathedral. Robert of Anjou, for example, was installed as Duke of Calabria here in 1297. The interior reflects this layered past. The main altar, created by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro in 1743, stands as an imposing centerpiece. The apse reveals the original early Christian structure. The Cappellone del Crocifisso (Grand Chapel of the Crucifix), located in the left transept, features statues of Costantino and Costanza sculpted by Lorenzo Vaccaro in 1689. Today, the Basilica di San Giovanni Maggiore is more than just a historical monument; it's a living testament to Naples' enduring spirit.
