The Fontana Della Scapigliata, a historic fountain in Naples, is situated on Via Egiziaca a Forcella, opposite the Ospedale Cardinale Ascalesi. Erected between 1539 and 1541, it was designed by Giovanni da Nola at the behest of Viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo. Originally named della Scompigliata, it was known for its unique water jet that crashed against a rock shaped like a reef in the center of its elliptical basin. Over time, the name was corrupted to 'Scapigliata'. In the latter half of the 19th century, the reef was replaced by a column topped with a coat of arms facing the hospital. Adjacent to it is another fountain, the Fontana del Capone. As part of Don Pedro de Toledo's plan to revamp the city's public services, the viceroy aimed to improve the areas near the ancient Annunziata complex. This included spaces that once housed the Santa Casa's lavatories, which were fed by the ancient Aqueduct of the Bolla. Today, following a conservation effort, the fountain has been restored to its former glory.
