The Greek Walls of Piazza Bellini stand as a testament to Naples' rich and layered history. These remnants of the ancient city of Neapolis, dating back to the 4th century BC, offer a tangible connection to the area's Greek origins. Discovered during excavations in 1954, the visible section in Piazza Bellini showcases the sturdy stonework used by the Greeks. Constructed from tuff blocks extracted from Poggioreale, these walls highlight the engineering prowess of the time. While other sections of the Greek walls exist in Naples, the ruins in Piazza Bellini are among the best-preserved. Piazza Bellini itself is a lively and bustling square, considered the intellectual heart of Naples. Surrounded by universities, including the Accademia delle Belle Arti and the Music Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, the piazza is a popular gathering place for students, artists, and tourists. The square is named after the composer Vincenzo Bellini, whose statue stands proudly in the piazza. Once adorned with statues representing heroines from his operas, only Bellini remains today. The piazza is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous cafes and bars that attract crowds in the evenings.
