Discover more about Monte San Costanzo

Monte San Costanzo, rising 496 meters, is the highest hill in Massa Lubrense and a strategic viewpoint for admiring the entire surrounding territory. From its peak, visitors can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views encompassing the Gulf of Naples, the Gulf of Salerno, the islands of Ischia and Procida, and the majestic Mount Vesuvius. The mountain is easily accessible and offers a variety of experiences for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. The mountain has two peaks: one crowned by the characteristic white Church of San Costanzo, founded in the late 16th century, and the other hosting a radio station used for air traffic control. A small pinewood between the peaks offers a shaded resting area and parking. A short walk up a few limestone steps leads to the church, dedicated to San Costanzo, a 7th-century bishop and the patron saint of Capri. Though the church is usually closed, it opens for a procession on May 14, when the statue of the saint is carried from the Church of Termini. In July, the statue returns to Termini with music and fireworks. Monte San Costanzo is also the starting point for the Athena Trail, a path rich in history and legends that leads towards Punta Campanella. The mountain's rocky appearance once led locals to call it “Monte Canuto,” reminiscent of an old, wise man. Hiking to the summit offers not only stunning views but also a chance to connect with the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Sorrento Peninsula.
