4.7

Palazzo Salerno, located on the left side of Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, is a significant architectural and historical landmark. Constructed in the late 1700s by architect Francesco Sicuro, it stands as a testament to Neoclassical design. Originally intended to house royal cadets, it later became the residence of Minister John Acton and subsequently, state ministers until 1825. The palace derives its name from Leopoldo di Borbone, the Prince of Salerno and son of Ferdinand IV. In 1860, after the annexation of the Kingdom of Naples, it became the military headquarters for the Neapolitan provinces. Today, Palazzo Salerno houses the general of the armed forces of Southern Italy. Facing the sea, Palazzo Salerno is one of the twin palaces that define the square, with its counterpart, Palazzo della Prefettura, facing inland. The palace's Neoclassical facade is similar to the Palazzo della Foresteria. Piazza del Plebiscito is known as Naples' grandest piazza and the city's central focal point. It is surrounded by other significant landmarks such as the Royal Palace and the Basilica di San Francesco di Paola.
