Discover more about Piazza Giovanni Bovio

Piazza Giovanni Bovio, often referred to as Piazza Borsa by locals, is a significant square in the heart of Naples. Constructed in the second half of the 19th century as part of an urban renewal project called the Risanamento, the square reflects the city's rich history and cultural dynamism. The square was completely renovated in 2011. Originally named after the Palazzo della Borsa (Stock Exchange), the square owes its current name to Giovanni Bovio, a philosopher and politician who lived in one of the buildings facing the square. A plaque commemorates his residence. The square is located at the beginning of Corso Umberto I, a major thoroughfare also built during the Risanamento. The center of Piazza Giovanni Bovio is adorned with statues of Vittorio Emanuele II on horseback and Parthenope, a mermaid from Greek mythology who is considered a founder of Naples. The Fountain of Neptune, which once graced the square, has been moved to Piazza Municipio. During the construction of metro Line 1, archaeological remains were discovered, including a Byzantine tower and Roman artifacts, which are now displayed at the Stazione Neapolis museum in the Università metro station. Piazza Giovanni Bovio is a bustling hub with cafes, shops, and frequent local events, providing visitors with an immersive experience of Neapolitan life.
