Discover more about Piazza Municipio

Piazza Municipio, or City Hall Square, is one of the largest squares in Europe, holding significant historical and cultural importance for Naples. Its importance dates back to the Angevins when the Maschio Angioino, or Castel Nuovo, was built. The square and the adjacent castle became symbols of authority. Over the centuries, the square has been modified and improved upon, becoming the grand space that it is today. Dominating the square is the Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, a medieval castle with high, turreted walls and giant round towers. Built in 1279 by Charles of Anjou, it has been towering over the square for more than 700 years. The Triumphal Arch of Alfonso, located between two of the towers, showcases Renaissance sculpture and design. Overlooking the square on the opposite side of Castel Nuovo is the Palazzo San Giacomo, which currently serves as Naples' Town Hall. Originally built to house Bourbon ministries, its construction lasted from 1819 to 1825. The Teatro Mercadante, consecrated in 1779, occupies part of the eastern side of the square. Today, Piazza Municipio is a bustling center of activity, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Neapolitan culture. Street performers, local artists, and vendors create a lively atmosphere. The square provides access to other attractions such as Via Toledo and Spaccanapoli.
