Discover more about Punta Campanella

Punta Campanella Natural Marine Area, where the Sorrento Peninsula meets the Amalfi Coast, is a place rich in myth, history, and natural beauty. According to legend, this is where Ulysses encountered the enchanting Sirens in Homer's Odyssey. The Greeks later built a temple to Athena here, which the Romans then dedicated to Minerva. The area's strategic importance led to the construction of a watchtower in 1334 by the Angevins, rebuilt in 1556, to spot Saracen raids. The tower's bell, 'campanella' in Italian, gave the point its name, warning of approaching danger. Today, the Saracen tower still stands, along with a staircase leading to the sea, where ships once docked to deliver gifts to the goddess Minerva. The Punta Campanella Trail offers an easy, 4 km roundtrip hike from Termini, the last hamlet on the peninsula. The path winds through olive groves and gardens, offering views of the sea and Capri. For a more challenging hike, take the path to Monte San Costanzo for panoramic views. The Marine Protected Area, established in 1997, safeguards the diverse underwater landscapes and marine life along the coast.
